Acupuncture:
involves the insertion of very thin, flexable, presterilized needles into specific body points, typically along the meridians, (the channels of energy flow). Nothing is injected or extracted. A mild pinch may be felt on insertion along with a dull/heavy/tingling "energy" sensation when the point is stimulated. Typically patients begin to feel calm and relaxed within a few minutes as the acupuncture induces the release of endorphins in the body.
Electroacupuncture:
involves the use of an electrical stimulator (similar to a TENS unit) to pass a very mild current between pairs of points to promote circulation and induce muscle relaxation.
Acupressure:
involves stimulation of specific points on the body using finger pressure to promote the normal flow of Qi.
Cupping:
involves the use of suction cups on specific body points to stimulate the body's anti–inflammatory response.
Moxabustion:
involves the use of heat from a lit moxa stick to warm specific body points and promote circulation.
Gua Shi:
involves the rubbing or scraping of specific areas on the body with a smooth tool to enhance circulation. Typically the areas are lubricated with medicated oil or salve to reduce friction.
