What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a natural therapy that dates back thousands of years. It belongs to the one of the world's oldest medical traditions. Specifically, acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into the skin at specific points.
According to traditional Chinese medical theory, the body stays healthy when its energy — qi (pronounced chee) — is abundant and flowing smoothly. Illness and/or pain is said to occur when the energy is weak or blocked. Acupuncture, by stimulating certain points on the body, is able to correct these imbalances.
Although generally pain free, a slight pinch may be felt as the needles are inserted. Once they are in place there is often a sensation of warmth or pressure, called the qi sensation. Usually the patient begins to settle into a deep relaxation within minutes of the insertion of the needles.
Acupuncture is performed with presterilized, disposable needles, and the skin is cleaned with alcohol so there is virtually no risk of any infection. Occasionally a point may bleed briefly when the needles are removed. Even rarer is the chance of bruising. Blood–thinning medications may increase the likeliness of any bleeding.
Acupuncture essentially works to help your body heal itself by making it stronger. Acupuncture promotes good health and well–being. Some people notice results after one or a few treatments. Often a series of treatments may be necessary to treat chronic or stubborn conditions. Degenerative conditions may require many treatments over time. However, there is no danger of too much acupuncture.
It is important for patients to be comfortable and relaxed during their treatment. Lying down either face up or face down are the most common positions, although treatments can be given on one's side or in the sitting position, as well. Soothing music is often played in the background to enhance the therapeutic effect. The needles generally remain inserted for 30 to 40 minutes before they are removed.
Acupuncture is very safe and does not have side effects like many allopathic (western) medicines. In fact, acupuncture helps to decrease the side effects of many medications by strengthening the body and by allowing the medications you may be taking to work more effectively. It is a good idea to inform your doctors that you are receiving acupuncture so they can reduce your medications whenever possible.
It is best to wear loose or comfortable clothing that allows good circulation. Nothing should be too tight or binding. It is best not to eat a big meal right before a treatment or to come on an empty stomach. Good personal hygiene also helps to reduce the possibility of any infection.
Acupuncture is used to treat a wide variety of illnesses and health conditions. It is often used to treat pain like headaches and arthritis, as well as conditions like high blood pressure, stress and anxiety, insomnia, problems with digestion and many others. Even if you have no particular illness, acupuncture is excellent for maintaining wellness.
